LAFKOS - PELION ( PILIO ) - GREECE
Lafkos is a beautiful picturesque mountain village 45km from Volos and at an altitude of 330m. It is built on top of a hill with a magnificent view of Milina, Alatas Island and the Pagasitic Gulf.
The village has kept the traditional architecture with numerous old houses and mansions. There are also many cobble-stoned paths that cry out to you to take a stroll down them.
For those who love nature, we suggest that you follow the path that starts in Lafkos and takes you on a magical journey, through scenery filled with vegetation and spring waters, to the beach of Agios Konstantinos in Paltsi. The village is surrounded by beautiful natural paths for walking, such as the one that ends up in Milina or another that takes you to Hondri Ammo (Thick Sand).
Situated by the square is the cultural club where you can see a large selection of household objects such as kitchenware, tools and books. Outside the old school of the village is an exhibition of sculptures, from the white Pelion marble, by the sculptor Thanasis Fambas.
At the large cobble stoned square you will find tavernas and restaurants, where you can enjoy your meal or drink sitting under the large plain trees.
The big monastery of Agios Athanasios is a few kilometres east of the village and was built in 1795. The monastery is set in a beautiful location, but if you want to visit it, you must ask for information from the town hall, based in the village square.
On May 1st and 2nd a large religious festival takes place at the monastery, where people from all villages in Pelion come to take part in the festivities and have a good time with traditional Greek music and dance and food and wine.
On the name day for the memory of Agia Paraskevi, which takes place on July 25th, you have another chance to see a typical traditional festival at the village square. Music and dance continues into the early hours of the next morning.
